NOTES!

Your main directive is a single question: if Gooseberry was a TV show (or a series of easy reader novels), what would be listed on its TVTropes page?

You can either include the little explanatory blurbs for each trope, or just summarize your character with a few tropes and no commentary if that's all too much brain-energy. I would personally love to hear all your meta-thoughts on your own characters, but also, real life sucks and we're all tired.

This is probably going to be pretty formatting-lite, so I'm not offering a code to copy/paste. Sorry! Maybe use cute emoji as bullet points? That's my only suggestion.

Ours, but also NPCs like teachers, Anon and Brother, the ghosts, or even family members of our characters!

An exchange student from England, Ari was originally the Beta Bitch in the bully clique at Hogwarts. She also played this role to Kenzie's Lovable Alpha Bitch last year, although the Mean Girls have kind of disbanded since they all took a level in kindness over the summer. Now she's kind of a Defrosting Ice Queen/Jerkass Woobie combo.

Raised by parents who were emotionally neglectful of her because she wasn't pureblooded, she grew up with books, horses, and muggles for company. Upon being sorted into Slytherin at Hogwarts, she learned how to play the role of a pureblood princess and manipulate her way through life.

She spent most of her sophomore year bemoaning her classmates' stupid plans and insisting that she was not friends with them, although she willingly took the fall for their second seance. After going through the events of the Endgame with a group of them, she's coming around to the idea of being a part of the group, although old habits die hard.

Also:

Important Haircut: She used to dye her hair blonde to imitate Mara, and went back to her natural brunette over the summer.

was 100% designed to be a Royal Brat, but because i kind of suck, ended up sliding into Lonely Rich Kid. regardless, he's definitely Idle Rich, much to his own dismay, as the rest of his family is not. and speaking of family, ulysses was made for cricket (RIP), which is why he's both her foil and very clearly related to her.

it's All About Him which is probably why he's the Friend Nobody Likes. may also be because he's a fragile flower who's always Trying Not To Cry. fuck off! he's sensitive! also, he's an animal lover, because dear god, he needed some kind of Pet The Dog. his only other (arguably) redeeming quality is that he would do anything for his friends, whom he sees as his Blood Brothers. he even cares about clementine, sort of. functionally, The Jester and a Bad Angel, unless he's in a Mood or spending too much time with Kenzie. i could literally do this forever, guys, but i'm going to stop because i care about y'all.

ulysses is my Chew Toy, but for everyone else, he is absolutely and completely a Damsel Scrappy. no one else needs to write this much, i just felt compelled to drag myself to hell and back.

i wanted an anti-blueblood, so cash was born to be a Self Made Man, literally. cash barely resembles his first draft app, but some things remain. despite aspiring to escape what he sees as the Crapsaccharine World of Stepford Suburbia, he's still a sucker for The American Dream, although as an unfortunate side effect, he's also very prone to the Hard Work Fallacy.

a cynic and a Deadpan Snarker, his Nerves of Steel and Chessmaster personality make him very much The Spock, although i swear this was an accident. cash is proof that Smart People Know Latin. still trying to figure out What Is This Thing You Call Love?. willing to Shoot the Dog.

an Aloof Ally to the juniors, cash used to be more social, and if you ask his parents, he even Used To Be A Sweet Kid before Todd came along. false. he was always a Jerkass. (okay, now i'm just being mean to him; he doesn't have a Heart of Gold, but he does have some feelings, way down deep. please stop making him feel them.)

because i am cruel, one can expect a lot of Break the Haughty. maybe then, he'll Become a Real Boy!

'It' Is Dehumanizing, Inverted: Ennis refuses to refer to the entities as 'it' and corrects others because it's dehumaniing. He referred to Anon as "they" before Brother referred to them as "he".

Immediately recognizable by an in-series nickname that the character once insisted upon, but no longer cares about whatsoever.

Wilde often displays as a soft combo of Stoic Woobie + Badass Bookworm (or so he hopes). Throughout junior year he proved prone to self-imposed isolation and moping while working through various feelings, but was willing to fuck shit up in order to protect his friends during the end-game event.

Senior year thus far, while Wilde's interactions with others come across a certain way due to lingering issues with self-image, he essentially means well and has a lot of sincere feelings.

Wilde has a type. In the past he was slow to admit his feelings for a love interest, but eventually made them known when it was time.

Always Someone Better: Clem and Ulysses are this for each other and it's why they don't get along.

Dating Catwoman: Clem thinks of Coppertale as Ebonhide's primary rival in Quidditch and she's dating Captain Sy.

Jerk Jock: Not as archetypal an example as Sy is, but she's also an asshole.

i wanted an anti-stoic, so... zach ☺. he's a Caretaker who is well on his way to being a Living Emotional Crutch and an overprotective dad, even though, like many of the juniors, he can be a little bit of a Cloudcuckoolander himself. he's a Good Samaritan who does his best to help a Friend In Need, even if he doesn't always make the best choices (sometimes through no fault of his own). 99% sure he fell into a Portal Book at any given time. As a Bookworm, he's always longed for adventure, but these days he knows to be Careful What You Wish For.

zach is a Scholarship Student who sometimes feels like a Penny Among Diamonds. it's part of why he thinks of himself as C List Fodder, and like... he is, but that's what happens when you're The Heart. he's grateful for the opportunities he's been given, even it occasionally, it does get a little overwhelming.

a Teacher's Pet, even if his homework does tend to look like the dog ate it. he's also Asian and Nerdy, which is maybe booboo on my part. he's not embarrassed to be the Library's #1 Fan, though! look, this school has plenty of athletes; he's squishy.

A though perpetually The Stoic of the Coppertale senior boys, Reid has a Sugar And Ice Personality. All the same, his lack of social skills lead him to struggle often and frequently with even small interactions. I'm probably guilty of him falling under Ambiguous Disorder.

While he's always seen following around Sy, a Jerk Jock, Reid himself is more of a Jerk With a Heart of Gold. Reid and Sy are Fire Forged Friends who irritated one another until Sy became captain. His talent in Transfiguration implies he's Brilliant But Lazy, and plays dumb sometimes to get out of doing anything he deems too difficult. On the Quidditch team, he's not easy for his captain to handle, but when it comes to being a Seeker, he's ridiculously good, and Sy just kinda has to deal with it.

Reid indulges in lots of Heroic Self Deprecation, but deep down he's a Wide-Eyed Idealist. All the same, his opinion on being a prefect is that Being Good Sucks.

Also, parkour and swans. Reid thinks he suffers from a little swan-brain even as a human. He might be imagining it.

Calvin is Sour Outside, Sad inside, but don't try to point that out. He's cranky even when it's completely uncalled for, which is an upgrade from what he used to be. When he came to Gooseberry, he had plenty of Break The Haughty experiences, and has been inching his way along a Jerk to Nice Guy Plot. He's been Stuffed Into A Locker before, and has had a few Cornered Rattlesnake moments.

He Hates Being Touched, and with boys he likes he's a bit of a Tsundere. Maybe because of his Paralyzing Fear of Sexuality. He talks big because of an Inferiority-Superiority Complex, but honestly he's a Nervous Wreck a lot of the time. Are you a good looking well-adjusted intelligent boy he doesn't talk to? Well he probably resents you a little.

I guess I should say some nicer things about him. Uh, he's a Classical Anti-Hero and an Unscrupulous Hero, plus he's smart for his age. He's a Sarcastic Devotee to the 40 best friends. Between duelling and his growth spurt, he's a Badass Bookworm. He's often Cole's Cloudcuckoolander's Minder. Damon's wild and adventurous, Calvin's serious and cautious, so they've got some Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling going on.

a dumb jock prone to comically missing the point, casey is an overly long gag that was based on two dudes taking their shirts off to mud wrestle.
his lite flavour morality chain was tutor cricket quayle, who taught him kindness (kinda) and turned this jerk into a slightly nicer guy. (or she was a morality pet, i don't know. it depends on if he began inherently good or bad, and that's honestly too big a question for me today.)
his sexuality is obviously anything that moves and a case could be made for him to fill the role of lovable sex maniac.
his d&d dmship is a result of his arc from ass to asinine, evidence of his role as a converted fanboy. whether or not he qualifies as a closet geek, i don't know.

an adorkable shrinking violet, kurt completed a kickass horse jump (IT'S A METAPHOR) that helped him grow a spine and come to terms with his self-identity as an obstructionist pacifist.
he can be found adoring the pests thanks to his being in harmony with nature.
animals/nature and theatre function as his stutter stops
stock animal facts. no explanation needed.
newt, his troublemaking new pet, is a pet baby wild animal.

She has a tendency to act Super OCD, which is why I have thus far refused to give her Actual OCD.

Archie's a certified Stalker With A Crush, which sometimes veers off into even creepier places. He's a softer sort of Broken Bird because of his home situation. He has a noted Lack of Empathy for his peers, even after he drugged the upperclassmen. Why are you not over that yet??? But often he's regarded as simply Troubled, But Cute.

To friends, he's an Absent Minded Professor with a side of Mad Scientist, but he's Too Clever By Half and often lands himself and others in hot water. Although soft spoken, he's often a Toxic Friend Influence and loves trying new things. Sorry, but It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time. This makes him an unexpected Wild Card, especially to authority figures, as he's hard to discipline. He's kind of the Token Evil Teammate on Ebonquid.

Archie looooves love, and likes to imagine himself as The Matchmaker. His world view operates on the Rule of Romantic, where everything has the potential to lead to love.

Lucas is Azurcrest's Eeyore but cast against the other houses he's more of a Perky Goth. He's an archetypal Sicky Neurotic Nerd complete with Nerdy Inhaler. Painfully shy and lonely, Lucas is driven by a desire to protect his friends. My boy is a straight-up Cowardly Lion, possessing a prediliction for Leeroy Jenkins-ing dangerous or stressful situations, which has gone about as well for him as it should.

Despite being a gifted wizard particularly in Charms, he chronically lacks self-worth and often winds up a Sad Clown. There's a 99% chance that any conversation you have with him will become a wiki walk as he is one of the junior class' many Cloudcuckoolanders. He's also a bookworm from a family of weirdos and has a dark sense of humor but is also a good boy. Even if he is a huge asshole sometimes.

Clingy Jealous Girl: They've both gotten weird about the other one having other friends/romantic interests, although it's usually a pretty mild flavor of this trope.

Geeky Turn-On: They're both kind of nerds despite being mean girls. Ari is also weirdly into Jade's ironic macabre shtick which is kind of a play on this.

I Don't Want to Ruin Our Friendship: Why Ari will absolutely never make a move on Jade unfortunately

I Just Want To Have Friends: They were both loner mean girls when they started at Gooseberry, and they're both looking for a place they fit in.
