okay, maybe i HAVEN'T told it????

when i was 8 or 9 years old, i was (don't act too shocked) pretty into harry potter. i wanted to be a wizard, which meant that obviously, i needed a wand. no wand shops in my stupid 'hood, though. what was a kid to do? obviously, the only solution was to steal a block of hardwood and my father's exacto knife. it went about as well as you might expect.

i was carving away and because i was a dipshit baby, i had my left hand braced upstroke of my knife. my hand slipped, and i took out a ....... pretty gnarly chunk of my left thumb. anything covered by my thumbnail? gone. you could see the bone a bit, to give you a sense of the injury.

i yelled for my pops and he came running. saw my thumb tip on his knife and his bloody, hollering child. ... and then he reminded me that we were about to leave for the beach.

my dad gave me four year old painkillers from when my mother was last in labour, put me in the car, and then drove 40 mins to the seaside. i had to stand on the road with my arm above my head while my family frolicked in the sand. i showed my war wound off to every child at school, and we were all very astonished to see that the flesh grew back from the inside out and that it looked kind of wrinkly, like a little brain.

this was not actually the last time i whittled because i have never learned a single lesson in my life.

i think it's because i was so young :|a jj can confirm tho i showed it to her like every day

i tried to make him a replacement out of sculpey clay and he like deadpan looked me in the eyes and was like "this is a serious injury"

he's also not very sympathetic to kids who ruin Beach Day

one time cam and i were at like a summer camp and i was carving soap bars and i cut my palm so deeply that it didn't even hurt bc my brain was in shock and nobody took me to the doctor then either

we're swapping war stories now

MY brother had an experience similar to Cam's. The same day my grandfather gave him his first pocket knife. Because he was just fucking playing with it.

DON'T GIVE CHILDREN KNIVES.

jesus christ what the fuck. at least... there was soap??? did you at least get it patched up later or did you have to spend the rest of summer camp like that?

iii have some irresponsible guardian stories in exchange, let's see...

one time when i was 3 i ran into an elevated diving board and was knocked unconscious and i'm p sure i broke the bridge of my nose (there was a mark and ridge there for years) and my mom just gave me a caprisun when i came to instead of taking me home or to a doctor. later, she just had our next door neighbor look me over. (who i THINK was a retired doctor?? we called him "Doc" but we lived in a poor neighborhood so idk if he was a doctor or if he just looked like Doc from snow white)

one time i touched a cactus in lowes and had spines all over my hands and she had me wait in line with her to check out and then finally took me home and used bikini wax to pull the spines out

one time i slipped on ice and fell down the front porch stairs and broke my arm and my mom sent me on the bus to school anyway, but my teacher ended up sending me to the nurse who then called my mom to tell her to pick me up and bring me to a doctor

(i was my mom's first and only child and she was super overprotective but also really dumb sometimes)
