when i visited meggie in the u.s. i was legitimately fucking weirded out by seeing crosses just... on display... in stores

that is not a thing here
Edited (which is to say it's somewhat secular here and also spring break honestly doesn't always coincide with easter) 2017-09-03 07:43 (UTC)

in ontario reading week coincides with family day, which is in the third week of february. barely anybody calls it "spring break" because you're still wearing your fucking parka.

over easter we just get a day off.

some schools have a reading week in the fall, too, but idk why. at my school UNDERGRADS get a week off in the fall but GRAD STUDENTS don't?!!?!?! it's UNJUST.

so here we get usually 2 days off for thanksgiving, 2-4 weeks between semesters in the winter, and a week off around easter for spring break. public universities don't have to give dead week off but it was very ubiquitous at my school anyway to give the last class or two before the final exam off, so usually i had a solid week of no class before finals week in the fall and spring. not for midterms tho
Edited (we also had puppy day right before finals started. a day when they brought therapy dogs to campus to soothe us) 2017-09-03 07:46 (UTC)

that sounds p similar to what we had, i think. 1-2 for tgiving depending on the school, min. 1 week between classes ending and exams starting, min. 2 weeks off over the holidays (more if you were lucky and your exams were early), 1 in feb for "reading week," 1-2 for easter depending on the school, and a rinse & repeat of the fall exam schedule before summer.

So let me get this straight

At other universities, you finish your last day of class, then you get a WEEK off, then finals start?

actually yeah i guess undergrads do get at least a week off classes, usually, BUT it's not treated at all like a break. people don't go on vacation or anything, they prep for their exams. but we've never given it a name and tbh i've never reeeeaaally noticed or thought about it until now.

except for how it always seemed to coincide with my birthday so there were like 3 years where i didn't have a party bc everybody was losing their minds over exams. :(
