ANONYMOUS EVENT REMINDER

Hello everyone! This is a reminder: Tomorrow morning at approximately 8:00 AM MST, the mods are going to post to the IC community announcing that anything written past that point is anonymous and private wards won't work. No exceptions. No backdating. This is for simplicity's sake, as we want the line between what is and is not anonymous to be very clear.

We'll announce ahead of time with another warning when the anonymous event is about to end. Thanks everyone! ♥

Oh, and, as always: feel free to use this post to plot!

This may have been answered before and I missed it, forgot, but after anonymity is over, will the posts written during it stay anonymous, or will people be able to go back and look at them and say, "YOU SAID THAT?"

No, everything that was written anonymously will remain anonymous, like a permanent blighted two days in their journal. We figured that if it all snapped back to normal at the end, people would hedge what their characters said and it might cause some OOC behavior. So no consequences for saying something mean about your friends behind their back, you monster children!

Ok so making sure I'm picturing this right: if someone tries to ward someone else, will it basically appear like normal on the page? Will the readers know it's an attempted ward, or will they be like "well that seems like an intensely private conversation there, idk why you're just airing all your dirty laundry like that."

additional clarification: at the start of the chaos, will people immediately realise their ward hasn't worked, or might someone write something in their journal with the impression that it'd ~gone through~ or whatever?

the latter seems less plausible to me for no concrete reason, but magic isn't real, so what do i know

Hey guys, we're thinking about Alex's question. When it comes to how wards will look during this event, should it be:

1. Wards fail and cannot be differentiated from other posts, i.e. they look like normal text, no indication that it was supposed to be warded
   
2. Wards fail and you can see who the ward was intended for, but not who wrote it. i.e. if Mackenzie wrote a ward to Iliya, everyone could see that it was intended for Iliya, but not that Kenzie wrote it.

Also, since Cameron snuck in a follow up question JUST NOW, for maximum embarrassment would you guys prefer:

1. Characters can immediately tell something is wrong, and therefore there's no risk of sending a humiliating ward tomorrow morning.
   
2. While writing into your journal, nothing seems amiss regarding your own handwriting in your own journal. It's only disguised in other peoples' journals. This will give everyone a brief window to make a really embarrassing failed ward before they all catch on to what's happening.

My vote is:
Wards fail but appear as normal text/you can't tell it was supposed to be a ward (to make it more vague and harder to figure out who is writing what), and while writing in your journal nothing seems amiss re: your own writing, so you have that terrible window where you don't realize you fucked up.

I have a potential problem with this that can maybe be cleared up via mod answer, which is that we haven't been 100% clear how wards work in-universe? Is it something they literally write into their journals or a spell they do? And if yes, when they do things like "Sophomores" or "Ebonhide Quidditch Team", do they write THAT or do they have to write out all the names in the group?

We're trying not to think too hard about it because... this is complicated enough. Based on peoples' responses to how they'd like this event to work, assume it's a variety of charm and that the words don't need to actually be written out. However, your character does need to have a specific list of names or strict group in mind, and the people on the other end know who is and isn't in the ward (we're not going to let character "trick" a third party into admitting things in a falsely private ward - those in the ward know who else is in the ward, no exceptions). So "All Sophomores" works, but "My Friends" only works if they have a precise idea of which friends are and are not allowed in.

okay, so in that case if a sophomore posted a ward to "all sophomores" that got anony-fied, would it display to everyone else as "all sophomores", or 39 names excluding the person who posted it?

Neither!

For anon, the "Warded to..." information just does not appear. It looks like ordinary text. Your character will not even know it was a ward.

OKAY, so it sounds like people love the idea of a window where their characters don't realize anything is wrong. Therefore, plan on it!

When your character writes in their journal, their own handwriting will appear normal, and from their end the ward will seem to work.

However! On the other end, wards will look like normal text, and any "Warded to Joey" text will not be visible in character. Please ignore it, and treat the ward like normal scrawlings.
