Hey gang! This is Katie (player of

tyhawkeswood) and apparently four characters is just never enough for me. SO. Here's the newest kiddo: Lachlan Galbraith! His full profile is available here.

Lachlan is a junior Azurcrest and a Muggleborn wizard that ~~was almost expelled from~~ formerly attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry (where he was in Ravenclaw). Originally from Edinburgh, his parents own/operate/reside in a historic inn that has a reputation for being haunted. It isn't, though; it just had an unskilled wizard living in it for a while. An overachiever and the golden boy of his family from a young age that lived for his parents' approval, he had a very mundane life before coming into his talents and finds magic endlessly fascinating. Bullied frequently at Hogwarts because of his heritage and his initial struggles with magic, he was nearly expelled during his fifth year because he began slipping a potion to one of these bullies to make him calmer and less aggressive and easier to deal with...only to unintentionally leave the boy unconscious for three days. Whoops? He confessed out of guilt and fear that not telling the headmaster what he knew would make the boy's condition worse. This stunt severely damaged his relationship with his parents (who are now very uneasy about magic and about him), got him suspended for a time, and almost got him expelled. It was recommended that he transfer to Gooseberry the following year to get a fresh start.

While Lachlan came to Gooseberry with some rumors floating around about his time at Hogwarts, few believe them anymore because he's such a straight-laced teacher's pet and a rule-following bore most of the time. He is driven to study and practice constantly because he enjoys learning, working toward tangible goals, and earning the approval of his teachers and older peers. He needs accomplishments to measure his worth and is a stereotypically high-strung overachiever. He's also less social than many of the jays; he isn't always a big talker, often preferring to listen to other people instead. Despite this, he isn't a complete stick in the mud. He enjoys games and sports and will almost always join in when invited, he attends parties, he adores nature and is an active participant in OE, and has a surprisingly sarcastic sense of humor when he's not trying to make a good impression on people. And he gets adorably excited when he successfully learns new spells or otherwise excels in magic. Because that is still just the best to him.

Lachlan is a bit finicky too. He likes to collect (pressed flowers, photographs of birds, etc.) and organize things, he's a total neat freak and will clean up after his roommates even if they don't want him to, and he is terrible at making decisions on the spot. While he's normally a grounded rule-following type, he makes bad decisions when pushed, rushed, or on the receiving end of peer-pressure. This is how he got dragged along for Azurcrest sledding. :|

His concept is: Former golden boy struggles with magic, lives with consequences, and craves approval.

Other Stuff!
- Yes, Lachlan does have a Scottish accent. Yes, it can be hard to understand him. Yes, he does incorporate Scottish slang and Scots words, making it even harder. Sorry (not sorry). His mother is originally from Norway, so he probably tosses some Norwegian in here and there too. Just talk to him on the journals. It's easier. :|

- Lachlan has a boyfriend back home and has been in the awkward position of maintaining a long-distance relationship all year. He loves him, though, and wouldn't stray. He has photos of them together taped up above his desk and will talk to anyone he catches looking at them about how cool and how fit his boyfriend is. ♥ ~~Don't let him. He's gross.~~ He's less likely to talk about how his boyfriend was his accomplice in the Potion Incident and never came forward about it.

- Sig (short for Sigurd) is Lachlan's pet cockatiel. This bird is friendly and chatty (knowing a handful of words and a considerable number of songs). Sorry roommates. Lachlan loves Sig and finds it relaxing to teach him new songs. He loves birds in general and is still tickled every time he receives a message via owl.

- Lachlan was sorted into Azurcrest because of his Spoonful of Sugar approach to work (he almost always finds a way to enjoy it) and because he finds genuine joy in knowledge and magic. Some of his housemates still don't get what he's doing there.

- Lachlan is a bright kid, excelling in things like Hermeticism and Potions because he has the time to think them through. Because he's so unadaptable and bad at thinking on his feet, though, he's not great at casual spellcasting and struggles in the application of things like Charms and Transfiguration (though he does well in the written portions of these classes). Defense Against the Dark Arts is his worst case scenario because there's a certain amount of pressure in play when defending oneself and he struggles in this class. It's likely obvious and a little awkward to watch.

SEEKING:

- Friends (especially Study Friends, Gaming Friends, & Hogwarts Friends). Lachlan isn't the most social guy in the world, so he shouldn't have too many close friends, but a few would be nice!

- Crush. Lachlan's got a boyfriend that he's committed to but he's only human and he hasn't seen the boy for a long time. Likely, this crush is a friend that he's become weird toward in the last few months. He tends to fall for people more charismatic and open than he is and especially likes guys that make him laugh. This is not mandatory at all, but more for some Lolz and Minor Tension if anyone is interested. It won't go beyond that. Probably.

- People that believe the rumors about him (some of which are accurate and some of which are not) and maybe don't entirely trust him because of it.

- People who genuinely can't understand half of what he says or try to mimic his accent. Both exasperate him.

- Whatever!

Hi~ You're up early! Also lachlan looks ridiculously adorbs.

JEREMY probably won't have a huge deal to do with him. Unless Lachlan is in the market for a tutor, in which case Charms and Transfigurations are Jeremy's strongest subjects, so a teacher could have recommended him. Other than that, I doubt there's very much else. Jeremy doesn't pay much attention to younger years that aren't in Ribbonfin unfortunately.

WYATT can totally believe the rumours about Lachlan AND be mind-boggled by his accent. I say this even though I lovelovelove the Scottish accent. Scottish/Irish I find are the best accents. It's just so musical! Okay but digression aside, Wyatt is definitely naive enough to believe things he is told, even if he's not in the habit of openly judgemental or harsh. They also have OE together. :)

I had to go to a conference this morning. BLEH. But at least it meant I could get this posted? Silver lining. Anyway!

Lachlan isn't looking for a tutor in Charms or Transfiguration just yet (he usually has Bs in those classes), but if that changes I'll keep Jeremy in mind! Otherwise, yeah, these two probably aren't in each other's orbit much.

It's a great accent, but there are definitely times when I can't understand it, especially when the Scots words are thrown in. I need subtitles and a dictionary, Scotland. :| So I'm right there with you, Wyatt. With regard to the rumors, I'll get something posted to the rumors page soon-ish, but I imagine it's various renditions of 'he did something bad to another student and was almost expelled for it', ranging from poisoning another student (which is pretty close to the truth) to beating up another student to bullying another student and the like. Whatever the case, it's never good and there's never any context. Lachlan generally dislikes the fact that there are rumors and he's evasive when people ask him about it, but there's not much else he can do about it.

Addy we've discussed and they should be close and she will love him and look out for him and hang out at grotto parties where he can't kiss anyone.

Jade is my other bb Acrest. She may not believe all the rumors, but she will certainly act like she does. Consider them spread. She will think his accent is fun though, and will be (...kinda?) nice enough to an older blue jay.

Ferdie is in gaming club with him and some classes and would like to him sometimes I am sure :(

We did! And Lachlan adores Addy and I imagine they hung out at a lot of Grotto parties not kissing people together before she became a free agent again. BUT YES. He thinks she's very sweet and he's impressed by her potions prowess and he was definitely supportive of her promotion to Azurbest prefect (you deserved it, lass!).

Oh Jade. Oh Jade. Lachlan will be nice enough to her if she's nice enough to him, but he definitely doesn't appreciate the rumor-spreading if he knows she's taking part in it. :|

HI FERDIE. Temperament-wise, I can see these two getting along fine but there might not be much to push them past anything but friendly acquaintances unless they just really click on game night or during something else. I'm happy to leave this one to in-game chance!

Pardon me, lots of words incoming, but...

Wow, so this never happens but Jacob is by far my most relevant character here. Jacob is also a Scottish Ravenclaw that was heavily bullied while at Hogwarts (for being a scrawny angry nerd that was easy to provoke into fights) and would have lived with Lachlan for the past five years and was his prefect last year. He's also an overachiever but incapable of asking for help so when everything last year got to be a little too much (Quidditch misery/prefecting/OWLS/etc) he decided to fuck off to America this year. A roommate poisoning/near-expulsion would definitely have added to that stress.

Jacob has always implied having a warm relationship with his fellow Ravenclaws since he considered them a sanctuary from the bullying he endured and I've always envisioned his roommate situation this year not being the norm for him so I would expect that he's friends with Lachlan. Though it's quite possible that his survival tactic of blending in with Coppertale as much as possible has caused them to drift apart. (Lachlan would obviously know Jacob's Deep Dark Secret that he is actually just.. not great at Quidditch and only made the team last year because of a lack of any better candidates. The shame. If asked about the rumors surrounding Lachlan, Jacob would likely give a Look and roll his eyes in response.) They are in a lot of similar classes and both in Gaming/OE though. Thoughts?

Ursula has class overlap and Gaming overlap and Lachlan is cute enough and adept enough at tucking in his shirt that I imagine he made it past round one of Ursula's prom date companion game. Alas, I'm not sure if he met her mysterious criteria required to pass the second round.

Essie is of course Essie. She thinks he's Super Cute, but if it's well known that he has a boyfriend, she'll leave him be from her Lists. She's in OE with him! And is a general prescence around Azurcrest camp.

And I don't think there is anything for Sun-mi, but she's in OE also.

OH MY GOODNESS. I didn't realize Lachlan and Jacob had quite that much in common but I'm excited! I didn't characterize Lachlan's relationship with his roommates at Hogwarts, but I like the idea of that relationship being a positive one and of these two being friends (since they were wee lads~). Even if things got a little hectic last year for them. Because Jacob had that position of authority in their group at Hogwarts, Lachlan probably respects him more than he does most people in their grade (like he does the current prefects, essentially) too and he really wants Jacob to like him/respect him/think he's a Good Guy. He's ashamed that Jacob knows what he did and feels guilty that it added to his stress last year, though, so that could be another reason that they might not be as close as they used to be. So maybe they're friends, especially in their common clubs and things, but there's some tension and some topics that they avoid most of the time? Something like that?

I'm honestly happy to approach them any number of ways, though. Still very tight, more estranged, still friends but with some tension and some distance due to their recent histories and different houses. I think they all have fun possibilities~ What do you think? :D

I also hope they're ridiculously Scottish at each other. Tell him more about this vegetarian haggis!

OH URSULA. I am actually hoping to have Lachlan be somebody's friend-date to prom, but I'm assuming that's not what she's aiming for anyway.

Essie is adorable~ I imagine the fact that he's not single (and not interested in girls no matter how adorable) is common knowledge among Azurcrest, probably? Sorry Es! But he probably likes her well enough and finds her mechanical creations pretty ingenious.

ulysses is in his year and, uh, idk. um. their underlying drives are honestly not that dissimilar — both are smart kids and a former Little Angels who crave validation and are very loyal to their own, not to mention they're both ... occasionally unintelligible, lmao. but ulysses takes a verrry different approach to life, and sometimes, i suspect, he sees his least favorite traits reflected in lachlan? and because he's not super self aware, he's probably like "man, that guy is a weenie." that said, he likes people who like him, so. idk? you kinda have to deal with a lot of ulysses already, lol.

zachary is in his house and a year below him. he choses not to believe that this cool kid drugged someone without their consent, because that would be CRAZY. stop spreading rumors, guys! they're different in personality, but lachlan has a lot of traits that zach admires, plus he seems like a generally good, smart guy, so zachary probably looks up to him a bit. he sees reece as something of a mentor, so lachlan might have seen him around the cabin (or just generally around the lib). they're both in the :genuine joy in learning" club, yay!

mercedes is a senior in his house and is exuberant and affectionate and non-judgmental, but also nosy af, so she has probably been all up in lachlan's business before and, unless he explicitly told her not to ask about something, will be again. she might've accidentally spread rumors, just bc she's chatty and has no filter at all.

cassius is a sophomore and not in his house, so he should have no reason to see lachlan, but at the same time, he is also an overachiever who bases his entire sense of self-worth on tangible accomplishments, so they might run in similar circles at times. if he knew lachlan's story, he would be way more judgemental about lachlan fucking up the potion than about the way he slipped magical drugs to the kid. you do what you gotta do, sorry for an collateral damage.

o m g Ulysses. That's amazing. Please always call Lachlan a weenie for being so much like you. ♥ I think whether Lachlan likes Ulysses or not depends on what aspects of him he's seen the most of. The charming, articulate, good-student version of Ulysses really appeals to him but the more entitled, bratty version of Ulysses doesn't interest him much. Though, exposure to the former first could probably neutralize the latter too. I really have no idea. Maybe this is one we should let develop in-game?

AWW ZACH. I'M SORRY. HE DID DO THAT, THOUGH. ♥ Lachlan spends so much time trying to impress people that he perceives to be above him, he probably doesn't know what to make of someone looking up to him. But I think he'd try to treat Zach the way he wants those people to treat him: with respect and acknowledgment and general kindness. He's not the nicest or most social guy in the world, but I think he'd like Zach and if they can get enthused about academics together, I think they'll be fine! See you at the library! ;)

Lachlan probably tries to evade or deflect Mercedes' questions when they get too close to things that are uncomfortable for him and he much prefers to listen to people talk about themselves instead of being pushed to talk about himself. So if she's pushed hard and frequently in the past, he likely avoids her or tries not to deal with her outside of a group. If she's spread rumors and he knows about it, he's definitely not happy about. Buuuut there's not much he can do and he knows that. Otherwise, I think he'd like her well enough!

To be fair, Cash, Lachlan didn't fuck up the potion. It's just that there was an ingredient in it that isn't meant for long-term exposure (as in day after day after day...) and that's where the problem came from. ;) Less judgemental now or is that lack of foresight just as bad? But yes, I could see these two being decently friendly library acquaintances? Respect among overachievers? IDK.

She absolutely hated her squonk and it was probably just a puddle of anxiety every time she came around. Also...... she...... probably (definitely) tries to mimic his accent. And if she ever had to go into his room for any reason, she'd ask about the photos above his desk like, "Is that your brother??? You look the same." (I'M SORRY.)

They share a few classes and they're also in OE together.

Levi absolutely pressured Lachlan into sledding. (Shame.) I doubt that Levi and Lachlan are especially close, but Lachlan likes him because he's charismatic and entertaining and extroverted enough to seek out attention from everyone. Even lil' exchange student juniors. While he does know that Levi is a troublemaker, this still makes him fairly susceptible to being roped into things by Levi. Though he'll try not to be. If he's ever seen Levi's bunk, though, he was probably on the verge of having a fit. :|

O M G That poor squonk. But sure! Lachlan didn't like their squonk either, but because he is an Overachiever he tried very hard to do what all the books said he should do and take care of it...but I imagine the creature saw through him and knew how frustrated and anxious it made him. Unless Charlotte's mimic of his accent was sooo horrendous it came back around to being funny then this definitely irritated him, though he's accustomed to being prodded like that and is pretty good at not responding by now. Aaaand I doubt she's ever been in his room, but that's AMAZING. Lachlan's witty retort is to stand there agape and sputtering. Because he can't even. How rude.

Kenzie is in his year/house and... you know what she's like. She's inclined to like her housemates, but she's got a big personality and she's nooooot particularly sensitive. She'll hassle him periodically and pressure him into having fun~~~

Reid is in his year, but they're both pretty closed off. :( It seems like they'd probably have a hard time talking??? That said, Reid's not hard to win over, he just makes other people do the heavy lifting. If Lachlan's willing to put out the effort for such a taciturn friend, REID IS THERE.

Diego is a year above him and is so!!! Friendly!!!! He'll be happy to big Lachlan and pressure him into doing stupid shit. They're in OE together where Diego is a major presence and actually comes off as competent.

Neil is also in OE. He does not come off as a competent. He's pretty self-involved so probably doesn't take much note of Lach. :x

Calvin is another Hogwarts kid but he's been at GB so long I doubt they really knew one another. Although Calvin did hand around the bullies, he was so teeny tiny at the time I doubt they had much interaction.

Rafael appreciates a Good Kid. Thank you for being good. Stop listening to troublemakers!!!

I could actually see Kenzie and Lachlan being friends or being friendly? He respects her academically, she appeals to his sarcastic sense of humor, and he isn't particularly thin-skinned so he wouldn't think much of the snarkier things that she says and does. While he's definitely prone to get his hackles up in the face of persistent, malicious bullying, she's never crossed (or even approached) that line in his mind. He wouldn't hesitate to tell her when and if he thinks she's being a jerk, though. Because he likes her, he probably has a harder time turning her down when she comes around to pressure him into things.

Reid...you're probably exactly right about Ried, unfortunately. Lachlan doesn't like or dislike Reid so much as he just acknowledges that he's a person who exists. But maybe they'll find some reason to interact more in-game!

Lachlan likely sees Diego the same way he sees Levi; charismatic (in a very different way), friendly, fun upperclassman that he isn't particularly close to but definitely likes. Making him more likely to get pulled along for Diego's bad ideas. He was probably pleasantly surprised by how knowledgeable he is OE, though, and I can picture them sharing a tent on one of the trips and how that resulted in a long back and forth about how cool reptiles and birds are. ~~Colossal nature nerds.~~

If Neil doesn't notice Lachlan, Lachlan likely stays out of his way. He's semi-respectful toward him like he is toward most upperclassman, but he isn't the sort that he'd be trying to impress or win over or anything.

OH CALVIN. Lachlan may judge Calvin a little if he knows who his former friends were and had bad experiences with them, but based on what he knows of him now he seems all right. No hard feelings, probably, but not much interaction either.

Lachlan tries so hard, Rafael. But people are so convincing in the moment and he can't not get carried along and he's sorry. :( Rafael is definitely the kind of upperclassman that Lachlan is desperate to have the approval of, so every time he's been involved in something like sledding and Rafael has shown up he's wanted to crawl into a hole and die.

Laurel is automatically great if she loves Sig, obviously! I'm sorry Lachlan has probably shown her every song that bird knows by now. THAT SAID. He likes her quite a bit and is happy when she comes into his orbit for a while.

Wilde and Lachlan are both in Saira's study group, so they may see enough of each other for him to be familiar with his sarcasm and dry jokes. If Wilde's ever told him his opinions on the rumors, though, Lachlan likely buttoned it pretty quickly or changed the subject. Friendly acquaintance/study buddies, maybe?

OSCAR is his ROOMIE! And he can totally crush on Oz. Oz is loud and funny and now has a GF so it keeps the form-into-something to a real real minimum but he is also pansexual and indiscriminately flirts and is way awkward but still a social butterfly anyway so :D :D :D i think he loves lachlan even if he can't understand him.

AVERY is in a couple classes and in AE with him. She probably had to ask him to repeat himself a lot when they first met but I think now she prob understands him... better? And she thinks he's smart and she is also not doing well at charms so they can bond over being crappy charmers. Being. UNcharming. Ha. Sorry, sorry.

ISABELLE has very little to do with Lachlan but his accent annoys her.

Samantha is probably one of the people who kind of uses his bad accent to make fun of him without trying to seem like she's making fun of him #sorrynotsorry

Penny is almost gone and irrelevant rn.

In the interest of not blowing up another cabin with potential awkward (sorry Ribbonfin), I think I'll have to pass on Oz as the crush, but I could definitely see them getting along and being friendly! While Oz's tendency to push for closeness immediately was likely off-putting to Lachlan when they first met, he knows that the guy means well and the enthusiasm is occasionally contagious. Also, Gaming Club buddies?

Pooooo kids. So bad at Charms. HOW CAN THEY MAKE SO MUCH SENSE IN THEORY, AVERY, BUT BE SO HARD TO EXECUTE IN THE MOMENT? Lachlan doesn't know but it frustrates him. He manages to pull Bs in the class, but only through coursework.

HI REECE LOVES HIM. They can be good friends or just study friends but I imagine they'd actually get along very well. Reece also collects stuff (he's got a bunch of old coins) and is a little picky about things and generally just like... lower-key than the rest of their house.

Ari was at Hogwarts last year, so... side-eye. She's probably also just an absolute terror to him and probably always has been, because she sucks and was friends w a lot of Hogwarts bullies. She can absolute believe/spread rumors about him :>

Reece and Lachlan getting along makes sense to me too! They're a bit out of step with others in their house but they're pretty in step with each other. Lachlan really respects him because of his intelligence and ingenuity, he likes listening to him talk (Reece can ramble and Lachlan can be quiet/prefer to listen so it balances out), and it's nice to have someone else with experience with Muggle things around too. Plus, he's the prefect, which means he gets an immediate bonus with Lachlan. Plus, Reece's ability to stand up to peer pressure may let him save Lachlan from himself from time to time, because he tends to cave when he's pushed and put on the spot. HELP HIM.

...so, that was a super long way of saying I'm hoping good friends? ♥

OHNOARI. Lachlan probably isn't intimidated or put off by Ari much without her bully squad to back her up but....still. Certainly not someone he'll seek out. Any particular brand of terror in mind?

At Hogwarts I imagine a lot of what the mean girls did was start rumors about people, expound on their insecurities, and peer pressure people into doing things that they weren't comfortable doing. Here she doesn't really hassle people face-to-face, but he might be able to spot her on the Anon post if he has an eye for like wording and stuff.

He's lucky he doesn't lean towards girls even the littlest bit or he'd be in trouble. and kurt is also way into nature and OE!!! he tried not to put much stock in the rumours but would have been nervous around him at the beginning of the year regardless. those icky feelings will have long since dissipated, and i can even see them being friends?

Seriously, though, Lachlan respects Quinn a lot (senior prefect in his house and a simultaneous badass/smart kid? OF COURSE HE DOES) and would very much like her attention and approval. idk. Dru probably knew him from Hogwarts. They were in different houses and she's a year above him, but they're in the same house now. She gets not being easily understood. She's super chill and doesn't study much, but they can get together and shoot the shit without worrying about being understood.

Chris is a year above him and far more social than Lachlan. idk if they can be close friends, but Chris is in the study group circle, so they could be study friends? But you know Chris well enough so you'd know if they can get along.

Teo and Olivia are both in his year and some of his classes. I feel like Olivia could actually be really good friends with him. Teo can be friends with anyone, and strongly believes that he can understand Lachlan. Lachlan has a good aura.

Solo is irrelevant.

Fun story: when I was in primary school my best friend's stepdad was Scottish, and whenever I went over to play at her house I'd just have to smile and nod to everything he said because I could not understand a single word. Anyway! Pippa also started Gooseberry this year so she maybe feels an ~affinity~ with Lachlan, especially given that she was also bullied at Hogwarts and Gooseberry was supposed to be something of a fresh start for her too. Re: the potion rumours, she kind of understands WHY Lachlan did it, even if poisoning someone is obviously Very Very Wrong. :( And... this would not have stopped her from ogling him whenever she and Essie hide in bushes and spy on boys (which seems to happen a lot???) SO it's probably a good thing he's both gay and spoken for.

Etta is a housemate and in OE, and would like to protest that the sledding was NOT a bad decision (even though IT WAS BASICALLY CARNAGE wtf Etta). She's always up for encouraging the more reserved Azurbirdies into having fun~

Coralee was VERY interested by the rumours surrounding Lachlan, and probably spun them wildly out of proportion like she was some kind of ~expert~ (although it's debatable whether or not anyone actually believed her additions). She probably also pretends not to understand a word Lachlan says. ("Are you even speaking English???") (Okay, maybe she's not entirely pretending.)

I spend an inordinate amount of time reading the scottishpeopletwitter reddit. Um, ANYWAY.

Lucas is one of the baby birds. He's in Gaming and is inclined to believe the rumors because his natural state is thinking the worst. However, he's also very much like "Same, Lachlan." because he is an underhanded revenge kind of guy. He is curious and also probably will not understand the accent at all.

Nia and Lachlan have a lot of class overlap? He blips on her radar as being a good and innocuous and I doubt she believes the rumors as a result. They are both overachievers, but I don't know that she necessarily runs in the same circles as Lachlan? IDK. MAYBE they will HIT IT OFF in play. WE'LL SEE.

Dimi might have stepped up at some point at Hogwarts to try and put a stop to the bullying Lachlan suffered? But he's also probably aware of the rumors and is kind of HMMMM about it? He is also friendly with Ennis and Jacob though, so, shrug emoji. Thoughts?

Takeru has a cockatiel, as well, and is otherwise irrelevant.

Zav does not understand a word Lachlan says. Does not believe the rumors because he thinks there's good in everyone. Probably doesn't talk to Lachlan in person much because he's afraid of embarrassing himself by mishearing something.
