SENIOR PROJECTS

[personal profile] wilhelmeana 2017-04-03 06:34 pm (UTC)(link)
some spitballing on the logistics of how senior projects will work

in June, seniors will be required to present a ~~senior project~~ in order to graduate. STRICTLY SPEAKING projects won't be graded, however it's worth putting in the effort because a) individual teachers may choose to grant substantial extra credit, e.g. if your project is a new working wand then you might get a grade boost in Artificing and Charms; and b) this is your chance to get Noticed

the headmistress will have a committee which reviews all of the senior projects, which might have several noteworthy former gooseberry alums on it who might be able to hook up your character with: a) production and distribution for their new magical product, b) apprenticeships, c) grants, d) publishing, e) gallery space, an invitation to join a theatre company, a RECORD DEAL, etc etc

all senior projects will be allowed exhibition space in the atrium, if they want it. there might also be scheduled shows in the auditorium. this is mostly for our arts students, but i mean if you want to do an exhibition of your science fair project new potion recipe or weird gadget or whatever then YOU DO YOU. if you want to stand up in front of all of your peers and go over your dissertation, you can do that too. public presentations will count for "effort" being put into your project, but if your character has horrible stage fright it's still optional

q: what if my character doesn't finish their senior project and/or present a ""good"" senior project? ICly it probably means you get held back but OOCly all of you are out the fucking door in july, no exceptions, so FIGURE IT OUT. and ftr ""good"" is pretty subjective here, they just want to see that you put some effort in, even if your kid didn't manage to reinvent the wheel. if your character is going to have a project that "failed," then they should at least present some work on why they failed and that will at least count as some kind of academic study. (e.g. spoiler but there's no way Mina is accomplishing what she wants to set out to do, so if she doesn't change her mind on that project soon, i might have her just... present a paper on why you CAN'T conjure edible food lmao)

ALL OF THIS IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE since i basically just made up all of it on the spot without consulting meggie sorry but hopefully it helps in plotting the senior project stress

this is super helpful, thank you! i've been kind of "AAAHHHHH WHAT HAVE I DONE" because i made quinn's senior project deliberately over-achievey, but the "let's figure out how to actually produce these things!" side of it has been boggling me. the panel of well-connected experts clears that up and justifies parts, while justifying why she just won't deal with other parts i thought she'd have to.

tl;dr: COOL! THANKS!

YES we did promise that down the line, bloom would want to help quinn with production/distribution, and this is what we had in mind when we said that ;u;

ok some followup q's

q: but for real what if my character doesn't want to present a senior project
a: then we're going to say they failed out and they have to transfer to ilvermorny (or some other school) to complete high school. SORRY

q: does my character still need to do a senior project if they want to be a professional athlete
a: yes because as much as this school likes athletes, this is the wrong school to go to if you just want to be an aimless jock. pro quidditch is HARD to get into, so all of you need backup plans and you need to spend some time thinking about that backup plan. STUDY. DO YOUR HOMEWORK. USE THAT BRAIN YOU WERE GIVEN. (lmao next year sy is going to be Struggling with this ;;;;)

I had to do one for my senior English class and I cut out felt letters and glued a Shakespeare quote on a bigger piece of felt and went "here give me my A now I have a lot of people to go disappoint after graduation"

for senior english, i wrote my final paper on the psychology of pedophiles (WHYYY??? HOW DID THAT GET APPROVED??) bc i suspected my teacher had an inappropriate relationship with my best friend and i was feeling petty. i got an A. (i actually put a lot of work into it tho)

i cheated on my chemistry final by storing all the formulas on my graphing calculator

I am so scared of senior projects
Leo's is just at this point an actual book/ entire class syllabus of tactical Auror training incorporating Animagus forms and Occlumency as animals and I should probably sit down to revise it or it's going to bug me so hard

Soooo, what happens if a senior finishes their project before June? Apart from their peers wanting to beat them up.

Per his meme the other day, Ty is hoping to finish his translation and restoration of a Mermish epic sooner rather than later so he can show it to his sister and use it as a way of proving his worth for working in her rare/magical books business. Would he be able to get it evaluated early? Or would he just need to wait and maybe arrange to show it to Sabi some other way? Or is he just SOL? XD Which would be fair. Since I didn't run this by you guys at all. (Sorry!)

Re: SENIOR PROJECTS

[personal profile] wilhelmeana 2017-04-03 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah i mean i think diego's practically done his senior project too? you don't get bonus points for getting that shit done early, you just have to hold onto it until june

i don't see why ty can't show his mermish epic to his sister now? like as long as no one else suddenly takes credit for it before june, ty is good to go

Re: SENIOR PROJECTS

High five, Diego!

And Ty's not looking for extra credit or anything, just trying to get his ducks in a row for post-Gooseberry life, so that's perfect! When he's finished, should I just hit the drop box with a request for a visit from big sis and it can just be handwaved that she came, assessed, and left or whatnot?

Thank you!

UHHHHHH i don't really want to open the door to relatives visiting the school for this but we'll put some thought into that later if that's the best way to do this plot for ty. is there a reason he can't mail it off to his sister and then ask her to send it back to him before june?

Diego's senior project: the only aspect of his senior year that hasn't been a source of drama.
